Novice Women Win Gold and Varsity Men Win Silver at New England Fours
Posted May 15, 2006

The Bowdoin Navy annually competes at the New England Fours Championship Regatta as a capstone to the spring season. This full day of racing in Worchester, Massachusetts draws schools from all over the northeast and offers Bowdoin rowers a chance to translate all their efforts from the New Meadows River onto Lake Quinsigamond.

After dominating in the first heat against Middlebury and Amherst, the Novice Women showed tremendous prospects for representing Bowdoin in the Grand Final. Stroke Alaina Thomas, Arden Klemmer, Liza Shoenfeld, Beth French and coxswain Kate Ambash later that morning captured gold with a time of 7:43.90, defeating WPI by five seconds.

The Men’s Varsity Four Boat, stroked by Ed Carr, coxed by Johannes Strom, and fueled by Nate Hyde, Luke McKay, and Mark Hendrickson brought home silver medals from the Grand Final. Ursus Rex reached the end just two seconds behind Amherst with a time of 7:00.28. Bowdoin’s steady, solid approach in the final 500 meters made for one of the closest finishes this season.

Other Bowdoin crews supplemented the exciting day of racing. The Varsity Women took second in the petite finals, both the Lightweight Men and Second Varsity Women took fifth place in the grand final, and the Novice Men showed terrific endurance in the grand final finishing sixth.
